 Santa Rosa Gang Task Force Unveils Prevention Plan At Conference: SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) – Santa Rosa Mayor Ernesto Olivares’ Gang Prevention Task Force unveiled a four-year plan Wednesday morning to stop youth and gang violence and victimization. The 2012-2016 plan’s goals include an awareness and education campaign about risk factors affecting youth and the resources available to them; increasing gang prevention programs especially in high-risk neighborhoods; intervention services that create positive opportunities for high-risk and gang-involved youth and their families; and increasing law enforcement efforts against serious and violent crime and enhancing the sense of safety reported by the public.

 Alleged gang leader killed: Montreal- The reputed leader of the notorious Bo-Gars street gang was gunned down in the crowded parking lot of the Galeries d’Anjou shopping centre on Friday night. Chénier Dupuy, 37, was sitting in his car when he was shot around 6:50 p.m. A few hours later and several kilometres away, 42-year-old Lamartine Paul was shot outside his apartment building on Samson Blvd. in Laval. Paul, a known street-gang member, had just arrived home and was walking through the parking lot behind the building when he was shot. He managed to walk to the front of the building before collapsing. He was unconscious but still breathing when police arrived and was brought to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Paul’s cousin is influential alleged street-gang leader Ducarme Joseph, who gained notoriety in March 2010 when gunmen opened fire inside his Old Montreal clothing boutique, killing two people.

 Report: 4 Killed, 25 Wounded in Weekend Violence in Chicago: (CNSNews.com) - The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday that four people are dead and 25 others wounded in "acts of violence" around the city this past weekend. Many of the incidents involved drive-by shootings, and press reports mentioned several gangs by name, including the Gangster Disciples and the Maniac Latin Disciples street gang.

 Organization aims to decrease gang numbers : RICHLAND, Wash. - Police estimate there are more than 3,000 gang members active in the Tri-Cities alone and only about 10% of them are actually documented. Francisco Gomez grew up as a gang member but was given the chance to turn his life around. Now he's doing the same for others through a gang outreach program called F.I.R.M.E., which stands for Finding, Impacting, Redirecting gangs through Mentorship and Education.

 Taking illegal weapons off Fresno streets: FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno Police Department is trying to clean up the streets by cracking down on guns. Police Chief Jerry Dyer says there has been a twenty percent increase in shootings so far this year compared to last year. A majority of those shootings have been gang related, so the department is beefing up its efforts to take guns away from wanted criminals.

 BC gang activity wilting under police heat: Gang activity in B.C. has wilted under the heat of Lower Mainland police forces, including the Chilliwack RCMP, says UFV criminologist Darryl Plecas. While the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit has put a “significant dent” in gang leadership, according to CFSEU spokesman Sgt. Bill Whelan, Plecas said “proactive” policing by municipal police forces like those in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and West Vancouver has given new recruits second thoughts about the gang lifestyle.

 Lawmakers seek to curtail gang formation: HARRISBURG -- After two young men were stabbed to death in a gang-related fight in December, Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan decided it was time to look at preventive measures for gang activity. He approached Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-Delaware, to propose a bill making it a crime for gangs to recruit members. Pennsylvania currently has no laws targeting gang formation and Mr. Pileggi agreed prosecutors need new means to do so.

 Troops recruited by gangs big concern for local law enforcement: The number of gang members tracked by the Colorado Springs Police Department has doubled since 2006 and right now that number is hovering around 1,200 known gang members; that's according to the department's Community Impact Team, or COMMIT for short. Six officers on the team do nothing but track suspected gang activity and investigate related cases. One of their concerns right now has to do with new gang members coming from the military.

 Parent Project aims to help parents of at-risk youth: LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Many parents in Lubbock have strong-willed teenagers who exhibit troublesome behaviors like drug use, gang involvement, violence and teen pregnancy. To help combat the problem, a new program is launching next week to help parents out. It's called the Parent Project and it's a 16-week parent training program that teaches parents how to identify, prevent and take on some of the most destructive behaviors teenagers exhibit.
