Information: Beyea's career was cut short June 8 by a suspected burglar who wrestled the rookie's revolver away from him. Beyea, 24, died in uniform on the street, a .38 caliber bullet through is head. Beyea's fellow officers killed one suspect in his slaying several hours later. Another suspect was in custody.
Information: Deputy Barthel was shot while investigating a group of suspicious males. He and his partner were assigned to the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau and were assigned to patrol a housing project. Deputy Barthel and his partner were walking up to a group of males when they threw drug paraphernalia into the bushes. As Deputy Barthel's partner went to pick up the drugs, the shooter opened fire from across the street with a rifle, striking both deputies in the face and torso.
Information: Baker, 42, counseled inmates at the Heman G. Stark Youth Training School in Chino. It was there that she was beaten to death on August 9, allegedly by 24-year-old inmate James Ferris. Police allege Ferris killed Baker with a battery pack and dumped her body in a trash bin. Ferris is already serving a life sentence for murder. Baker's body was found August 11.
Information: On July 27, 2007 Officer George V. Cortez #8232 was killed after responding to a call that a man and woman were passing forged checks at a business at 83rd Ave and Encanto Blvd. Officer Cortez entered the business and was placing the male suspect in handcuffs when he drew a gun and shot Officer Cortez several times. Officer Cortez was 23 years old and had served with the department for two years. He had also served as a Detention Officer for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
Information: Information: On March 26, 1999, Officer Marc T. Atkinson #5930 began following a suspicious vehicle, occupied by three suspects in the area of 31st Ave and Thomas Road. The driver lured Officer Atkinson into an industrial area at 30th Ave and Catlina Drive where he was ambushed by gunfire and killed. A citizen who witnessed the incident engaged the suspects in a gunfight with his own weapon, seriously wounding one. The other two fled, but were arrested later.
Information: Deputy Andrews was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at a service station while he was off duty. A suspect tried to rob him in the gas station's restroom and shot him when he identified himself as a law enforcement officer. The suspect stole Deputy Andrews' service weapon and department identification before fleeing. The suspect was arrested, convicted of Deputy Andrew's murder, and has since been released from prison.
